چکیده

A Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) was assembled for gold production extending from the formation of gold-ore deposits through the production of semi-refined gold-silver bullion. Inputs traditionally considered in life cycle assessment (LCA) such as energy, materials, and capital were counted along with geologic inputs and labor. Emergy, rather than traditional LCA methods, was used to make inventory cutoffs and to measure environmental impact as total environmental contribution. Uncertainty analysis was performed by characterizing both input flows and unit emergy values with uncertainty values and performing Monte Carlo simulations. A breakdown of emergy requirements for different stages of the process and the uncertainty ranges of parameters and results are presented. The benefits of using LCA software to create and manage LCI inventories and of combining these different accounting frameworks are discussed. The results show that mining is more intense in emergy contribution than the geologic work of deposit formation.

Eco-LCA: An Emergy Inspired Approach and Software to Account for the Contribution of Natural Capital to Economic Activity

One of the main fortes of emergy analysis is its ability to account for the contribution of ecosystem goods and services, or natural capital. Other holistic analysis methods including life cycle assessment, energy and exergy analysis have ignored this crucial contribution from nature, which is the very basis of sustainability. We introduce a novel approach for an Ecologically-Based Life Cycle A...

The Added Value of Integrating Emergy into LCA

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has become a standard procedure to investigate the environmental performance of human-dominated products and processes. It is meant to capture the overall impact of a product or service along its lifetime and supply chain, and it is structured in four steps: goal definition and scoping, inventory, impact assessment, and interpretation. Impact assessment is carried ou...

Making Emergy Analysis More Popular for Environmentally Conscious Design and Manufacturing - Challenges and Opportunities

As the need for changing the current non-sustainable industrial activities becomes increasingly obvious, engineers are being forced to consider more holistic techniques for design and assessment of industrial products and processes. As a result, techniques such as life cycle assessment (LCA) and material flow analysis (MFA) have been developed and are increasingly popular. Many of these techniq...

An Emergy Comparison of Different Alternatives for the Cogeneration of Heat and Electricity

The study deals with an emergy evaluation of the supply of electricity and heat to a large user, namely a public hospital in Northern Italy. We performed firstly a conventional LCA evaluation, in order to identify and quantify the material and energy flows involved in three cogeneration alternatives for the hospital. The evaluated cogeneration alternatives were: 1) an Internal Combustion Engine...

Dealing with Emergy Algebra in the Life Cycle Assessment Framework

Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) represents one of the four steps of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, which is a standardized procedure (ISO 14040:2006) to estimate the environmental impacts generated by the production, use and delivery of goods and services and final waste disposal. The calculation of emergy using LCI databases is acknowledged to be of great advantage to improve the accu...
